Types of Brazing Materials

Brazing filler metals are consumable joining materials, supplied in forms such as powder, paste or ribbon. During filler-metal brazing, the filler melts while the base metals remain solid. The brazed component is the resulting assembly, not the filler material itself. Base-metal grade, filler chemistry, joint geometry and the manufacturing cycle together determine the resulting joint.

Our industrial brazing materials include nickel-based, iron-based, titanium-based, aluminium and zinc-aluminium fillers. The tables below identify our powder and paste grades. Contact us to select copper brazing materials or specify ribbon dimensions, alloy and delivery form for your joining process.

Brazing is a joining process; filler metal is a material used in that process. Solid-state diffusion bonding produces diffusion-bonded components without melting a brazing filler and is not a type of filler metal. Select the filler and joining process together, and qualify the resulting joint for its service conditions.

Copper Brazing Materials

Select copper brazing materials to suit the base metals, joint geometry and joining process. HEXNOVAS can assist with grade selection and the technical data required for your application. Copper brazing is also an established route for joining stainless steel BPHE plates. A copper-brazed plate heat exchanger can serve compatible HVAC water loops, refrigeration and heat-pump circuits in a compact, permanently joined assembly.

Check the fluid and cleaning chemistry before selection. Ammonia, sulphur-bearing contaminants and aggressive water can make copper unsuitable. The stainless plate grade also needs review for chlorides and temperature. Neither copper filler nor stainless plates provide universal corrosion protection.

Nickel Brazing Alloys

Nickel brazing uses a nickel-based filler alloy. It offers a possible copper-free joining route for selected chemical-process and refrigeration duties where copper contact is restricted. Our nickel brazing alloys below have different melting and processing ranges; they are not interchangeable recipes.

Verify the exact alloy, joint clearance, furnace conditions and finished joint properties. A nickel-brazed plate heat exchanger still requires fluid-specific approval, including compatibility with cleaning chemicals. Nickel brazing does not guarantee suitability for ammonia, seawater or every corrosive fluid.

Stainless Steel Brazing and Bonding Technologies

For a stainless steel brazed component, including a heat exchanger, distinguish the stainless base metal from the joining material. Stainless or iron-based filler-metal brazing uses a molten filler; solid-state diffusion bonding is a separate joining process with controlled surface preparation, temperature and pressure.

Copper-free and nickel-free are different requirements. Stainless alloys can contain nickel, and our S2508 and S2509 iron-based fillers contain nickel. They must not be described as nickel-free. Confirm the composition of the complete wetted construction when metal-ion restrictions apply.

Review the existing copper-free fusion-bonded heat exchanger product page for product selection. The precise joining process and suitability require project confirmation; this guide does not claim that HEXNOVAS offers solid-state diffusion bonding.

Brazing Material Comparison

Compare copper and nickel brazing materials with stainless or iron-based joining routes. The stainless column distinguishes filler-metal brazing from diffusion bonding rather than treating them as interchangeable materials. These are selection considerations, not performance ratings; compatibility requires engineering verification.

Aplikasi Industri

Industrial brazing applications are defined by the metals and joint requirements, not by an industry label alone. The listed filler grades support a material-review enquiry; they are not evidence of approval for every component in the sectors below.

Heat exchangers, refrigeration and HVAC

Review filler and base-metal compatibility for heat-transfer assemblies, refrigerant circuits and water-side equipment. Pressure containment, leak integrity and cleaning chemistry require assembly-level qualification.

Automotive thermal management

For an aluminium thermal component enquiry, begin with the actual alloy and joint design. Our range includes AlSi fillers for the aluminium series shown below and AlSiMg for vacuum brazing. Qualify the selected filler and joint for the specific component. Confirm cycling, coolant exposure and production qualification.

Industrial equipment and metal fabrication

Select the filler family around the base metals, joint geometry, furnace atmosphere and service loads. Our ZnAl fillers have aluminium–aluminium and aluminium–copper joining applications, as shown in the grade table. Confirm suitability for the particular fabricated assembly through joint trials.

Electrical components, where applicable

Electrical joining enquiries additionally require conductivity, contact resistance, operating temperature and insulation constraints. No electrical component qualification is established by the published tables; obtain a grade-specific recommendation before specifying a filler for this duty.

Brazing Materials for Heat Exchangers

In a BPHE, brazed joints connect the plates and seal the fluid channels. Assess corrosion resistance for both the plates and the joints. Operating temperature limits, allowable pressure and resistance to cycling belong to the qualified exchanger design: a filler melting temperature is not a service-temperature or pressure rating.

HVAC, refrigeration and heat pumps require review of the water circuit or refrigerant and lubricant combination. Industrial refrigeration applications illustrate why phase change and operating conditions belong in the selection enquiry.

Industrial cooling, data centre cooling and industrial heat recovery require assessment of water treatment, glycol or other additives, cleaning agents and operating cycles. Chemical processing needs the full fluid composition rather than a generic label such as “process water”.

Marine installations require particular care: a closed freshwater circuit and direct seawater service are different duties. No material in this comparison is a blanket recommendation for seawater. Application names alone do not establish suitability.

How to Select Brazing Filler Metals

  1. Define the joint and service environment. Identify both base metals, coatings, joint clearance and required joint properties. For fluid-contact assemblies, supply composition, concentration, chloride concentration, pH, contaminants and corrosion potential, including oxygen or oxidants where relevant.
  2. Define the operating envelope. Give normal and maximum temperatures, mechanical loads, cycling and abnormal conditions. For pressure-containing or heat-transfer assemblies, include pressures, flow rates and phase changes.
  3. Include cleaning and maintenance. Identify chemicals, concentrations, temperatures and exposure times. State expected service life and inspection requirements without treating them as guaranteed outcomes.
  4. Identify industry requirements. State material-contact restrictions and applicable project requirements. Request grade-specific technical and safety data sheets.
  5. Confirm the complete construction. Review plates, joints and connections together. For filler procurement, also provide base metals, clearance, delivery form and furnace process, then agree qualification trials.

Pertanyaan Yang Sering Muncul

What is the difference between copper and nickel brazing?

Both use a filler that melts while the plate material remains solid. Filler chemistry, processing requirements and resistance to the service fluid differ. Choose the complete plate-and-joint construction, not the filler name alone.

When should a copper-free heat exchanger be selected?

Consider copper-free construction when fluid chemistry, contamination limits or an application specification excludes copper contact. Confirm every wetted component and obtain approval for the actual operating and cleaning conditions.

Are nickel-brazed heat exchangers suitable for ammonia?

Some manufacturer-qualified nickel-brazed designs are used with ammonia. This is not approval for every nickel alloy or HEXNOVAS model. Obtain written confirmation for the refrigerant, lubricant, water content, pressure and temperature before selection; copper-brazed construction is not an appropriate default.

Can copper-brazed heat exchangers be used with seawater?

Do not assume suitability for direct seawater duty. Chlorides can attack stainless plates, while the filler and other wetted components also require assessment. Ask for a seawater-specific material review or evaluate an isolated secondary circuit.

What determines brazing material compatibility?

The complete fluid composition and concentration, pH, chlorides, temperature, oxygen or oxidants, contaminants, flow conditions and cleaning chemicals must be considered together with the plate and filler alloys.

What is the difference between stainless steel brazing and diffusion bonding?

Filler-metal brazing melts a separate filler while the base metal remains solid. Solid-state diffusion bonding joins contacting surfaces through diffusion under controlled temperature and pressure without melting a brazing filler. A commercial fusion-bonded product name alone does not identify the precise process.

How does brazing material affect heat exchanger service life?

Joint corrosion and the response to thermal and pressure cycling affect durability alongside plate corrosion, fouling and maintenance. No fixed service life follows from a filler designation; review the operating envelope and cleaning programme for the complete assembly.

From material selection to a brazed joint

1. Define the joint

Identify both base metals, coatings, joint clearance and the required service conditions.

2. Match the process

Review filler chemistry, application form, furnace atmosphere or vacuum, and the proposed thermal cycle.

3. Qualify the assembly

Agree sample trials and joint inspection, leak testing or mechanical testing appropriate to the finished component.

For heat exchanger applications, start with the base-metal construction and manufacturing process. A filler material alone does not establish the pressure rating, corrosion resistance or certification of the complete heat exchanger.
